Marx puts forth the proposition “Labour creates beauty” in his “Economic philosophy Manuscript 1844".The labour here mainly refers to alienated labour. And the alienated labour is the labour that alienates men's nature. It possesses a function of dissolving and destroying man's creation of beauty. However, the law of labour itself and its creative ability can still help man maintain a certain non-alienation,which enables man to restore himself rationally, dynamically and realistically and to create beauty in his objectified labour. The removal of alienated labour is the basis of man's emancipation as well as the condition for the emancipation of beauty creation power.

To the present heated contention about various cultural issues, the exposition of the founders of Marxism on cultural progress and world culture is still of much significance. They have specifically and historically examined how the material life of various periods governs the progress of cultural life and concluded that cultural progress underwent three stages:the intersection of material production and cultural production, cultural production is culture itself, and the formation of “world culture”.“World culture” is by no means a permanent being, but a historical product of modern mass industrial production, closely related to the formation of “world market”,“world communication”,and “world history.” World cultrue is by no means non-nationality.It can never be realized by the extinction of individual cultures, nor can it domineer over in dividual cultures. On the contrary,it is manifested by mutual communication, mutual learning, mutual influence and mutual challenge of individual cultures.

The appearance of the tendency of cultural study in China has its own complicated social and cultural backgrounds. The reason lies in both the history and the reality of literature. It has also been deeply influenced by the current thoughts of Western cultural study. But the current cultural study is quite different both from the totality study in the past and from the Western cultural study today. Therefore, the three Marxist principles of totality, criticizing and esthetic should still be considered as the guiding principles when we carry on the cultural study of literature.

The flowering of scientist trend of thought during the May 4th period was the inevitable coures of China's progress towards moderniaztion as well as the positive trend of modernity. However,it drowned humanism,i.e. replacing the “human law” with the “material law” as revealed by scholars of the Xueheng school, and appeared as a negative trend of modernity to some degree. The Xueheng scholars criticized scientism and advocated traditional culture, criticized the literary outlook of historical evolution of science, and opposed literary realism and romanticism. We can not judge this attitude of theirs as reactionary to the progress of history.Seen from another angle, this attitude contains the introspection and readjustment of the negative factors towards modernity.
