To benefit oneself and others at once is the fundamental and perpetual principle of being good,which should and can guide the perpetual conducts of individuals. Its significcance is manifested in the individuals' displaying self-benefiting and altruistic spirit when personal benefit is in conformity with that of society or other fellow beings.To merely benefit oneself is the lowest and ocassional principle of being good, which should only and can only, guide the ocassional behavior of the individuals.Its significanec is manifested in the individuals' displaying mere self-benefiting and non-self-harming spirit when personal benefit is not at direct conflict with that of society or other fellow beings. It has also been deeply influenced by the current thoughts of Western cultural study.But the current cultural study is quite different both from the totality study in the past and from the Western cultural study today.Therefore,the three Marxist principles of totality,criticizing and esthetic should still be considered as the guiding principles when we carry on the cultural study of literature.
