The Dramatic Pursuit of Women's Poetry in China since the 1980s

Since the 1980s,Chinese female poetry has exhibited a unique charm in its pursuit of dramatization.The British and American theatrical theories argue that drama and poetry are inextricably linked in terms of literary nature.The translation and dissemination of this theory in China have inspired female poets since the 1980s to consciously embark on a pursuit of dramatization in their poetic creations,manifesting in three specific aspects.Firstly,in the process of narrative interpretation,female poets often utilize the aggregation of dramatic conflicts to construct emotional climaxes in their poems.Centering on conflicts,these poets show the antagonistic clashes between "I" and the external world,as well as self-cognition within the essence of life.Secondly,in the utilization of linguistic techniques,female poetry favors colloquial language commonly seen on the stage,adding an artistic dimension to poetic expression through the perspective of the meta-language of observation and performance,presenting a unique carnival.Thirdly,in the appropriation of theatrical experience,female poetry pursues a revolution in visual elements and an impact in auditory elements,actively promoting the practice of poetic drama to interpret the theatrical metaphor of "life is like a play." From "theatrical thinking" to "poetic drama practice," female poetry continues to innovate and develop in its pursuit of dramatization,enriching narrative techniques and broadening expressive territories.These practices not only show the unique charm of poetic art,but also reflect female poets' keen insights into the real world and their humanistic concern.

Postclassical narratology originated in the West.In recent years,however,under the introduction of a number of scholars,it has set off a research boom in China.The research in this field is mainly divided into five categories:analyzing the relationship between classical narratology and postclassical narratology,clarifying the characteristics and research hotspots of postclassical narratology,researching on representative theories of narratology and on typical texts,and predicting the development trend of postclassical narratology.Although the research of postclassical narratology in China has achieved many gratifying fruitful results,there are still many demerits.At present,the primary task of domestic research on postclassical narratology is to realize the dialogue between Chinese and western postclassical narratology by combining various research situations of postclassical narratology.

Multi-ethnic integration is an important feature of the literary world of the Yuan Dynasty.The Xie Family of Gaochang (in today's Turpan) had frequent activities in the multi-ethnic literati circle of the Yuan Dynasty.The isolated work of Xie Bai-Liaoxun is kept in Korea and it has much to be elucidated.The objects of his farewell poems are Han Confucianism,relatives and friends in the Western Regions,Muslims in China and monks and Taoists,which proves that Chinese culture is the common spiritual wealth of all Chinese nationalities.His poems show the cultural characteristics of people in the Western Regions who are good at financial management,and the ethnic character of optimism,humor,bravery and chivalry,making them brilliant in the poetry world.In terms of genre selection,he incorporated the characteristics of Western music into the creation of Chinese poetry,and his "miscellaneous poems" such as five-sentence poems and six-character poems were unique.The sincere feelings of Xie Bai-Liaoxun's poems confirmed the close relationship among the multi-ethnic scholars in the Yuan Dynasty.The attention the poets in Western Regions paid to the imperial examination and the successive victories of the Xie Family are the new differences in the literature and history of the Yuan Dynasty.Through the discussion of these problems,it can be found that the poetry of the Yuan Dynasty has the "beauty of quantity" compared with that of the Tang and Song dynasties,which can better construct the "history of multi-ethnic Chinese literature".The discussion concerned can provide historical reference for shaping the consciousness of the Chinese nation's community.

"Frontier Documentary" is the non-fiction filming of the frontierethnic people to film themselves.In the generalized aesthetic perspective of Jacques Rancière's "partage du sensible",the frontier documentaries embody the non-discrimination of subject selection and the liberation of human natures,and explore its artistic and political values with the introduction of equality dimension.Through the artistic operation of "self-otherization",it has transformed the order of "partage du sensible" in the frontier.The rural expressions released by the transition from "etic" to "emic" and "participative filming" to "independent creation" have become the key quality to evaluate its poetic power.On the other hand,the image representation based on "difference" often leads to "the narcissism of minor difference",and excessiveness of parole also brings some kind of "sanctification conception",which then makes its difference politics paradoxically generate new sensible inequalities.

A collection of Indian fables,Panchatantra,takes an important position in the history of Indian literature with its outstanding thought and artistic characteristics.With Arabic translations of Kalilah Wa Dimnah and Arabian Nights as well as Hinduism and Buddhism as its carriers,Panchatantra has been spread to many countries in Asia and Europe,only less than The New Testament and The Old Testament of Christianity in terms of number.In the cultural exchanges between the East and the East,and between the East and the West,Panchatantra has produced a significant influence and contributed to the development of world literature.Due to differences in social customs,national characters,religious belief and translators' styles as well as factors such as time span,cultural filtering and cultural misreading,Panchatantra has formed the variation of "creative treason" in various countries,even in the cultural rules and literary discourse.The book has undergone a deep change,that is,the domestic appropriation.The phenomenon of variation occurs throughout the exchange of civilizations.Fundamentally,it is necessary to advance to the intersection of heterogeneous civilizations through the comparison of heterogeneous civilizations,to look at the collision and integration of various civilizations from an open,pluralistic,and inclusive perspective,and to explore the essential laws among them.

Shen Congwen and Williams are two contemporary local writers with great local consciousness in China and America. They have always adhered to the creative idea of making a life for human beings, and have deeply understood and deeply reflected on history. Its ideological theme has roughly experienced the process of extending from "individuality" to "collectivity" and then upgrading to "class", and its cultural vision has also expanded from the native land to the whole mankind and from the past to the future. They are actively concerned about human nature and deeply concerned about the overall destiny of mankind, and their artistic thoughts are far beyond the times they live in, and will last forever in the long river of time.

The origin and development of community are based on its needs.Science fiction movies are born to meet the needs of people,and in turn,they express theneeds of people as their content.The latter mainly has three orientations,namely,the need for the community,the need of the community itself,and the need derived from the community.The relevant description of Chinese sci-fi movies is consistent with the concepts of Chinese traditional culture,that people are divided by groups,that one considers others in his own place,and that one stops at the best.These concepts are of great ethical value for building a community with a shared future for mankind and worthy of in-depth study.

The history of western literary theory has undergone five paradigm conversions,bringing about different literary concepts.Literature Reception of “Imitation Theory” is a kind of “sincerity listening” of pursuing ontological world;literature reception of “Practical Theory” is a kind of interesting reading for the rational purpose;literature reception of “Performance Theory” is a kind of experience reference for the pursuit of spiritual freedom;literature reception of “Objective Theory” is a kind of mental compensation of aesthetic autonomy;and literature reception of “Reception Theory” is a kind of dialogue communication with pluralism.The reflection on and theoretical description of the western literature reception is of importance to understand the conceptual history of reading.

Instead of being an experimental art form that is exclusively obsessed with linguistic game,contemporary western metafiction is a dialectic synthesis of cultural criticism,artistic practice and cultural event.To begin with,it is a theoretical construct that stems from contemporary literary theory in the sense that the textual self-reflexivity it exhibits is synonymous with anti-humanism and anti-essentialism that were popular in the humanities in contemporary western world.Meanwhile,as an artistic practice,it is ever fleeing the narrow confines of theoretical discourse.By foregrounding the internal paradox of literature,metafiction creates a hermeneutic space that lies between autonomy and heteronomy.But as the art practice enters into the historical process,metafiction,which is a hallmark of contemporary avant-garde,stands in an ambiguous relationship with the mass culture industry,the result of which could be a weakening of its supposedly subversive potentials.Only through a dialectic understanding of metafiction could we circumvent the simplistic emphasis of current studies on the dimension of formal experiment.

The sense of time of modernity is the core connotation of modernity.The totem of time has been appearing more frequently in various forms in theBritish Desert Island novels.The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe expresses an optimistic attitude toward the sense of time of modernity while Gulliver’s Travels questions the blind belief in it.Since the 19th century,British Desert Island novels have begun to alienate,oppose,and deconstruct the optimistic attitude toward it.The Beach manifests the futility of the contemporary men in releasing the bondage of simultaneity and pursuing the new sense of time.The “negation of negation” transformation throws light on the intensification of the paradox of modernity.

In Chinese literature,Xiangxi image is a unique cultural and literature phenomenon with multiple aesthetic modalities manifested,among which Xiangxi image in folk legends,however it is displayed,is a binary opposition situation,deeply embodying the divergent aesthetic appreciation between self and the other.Shen Congwen’ s poetic demonstration about local features and survival situation of people in Xiangxi have realized the most successful self-molding of Xiangxi.The romantic and poetic Xiangxi images in his works contain profound value core,referring to the insights and reveal of humanity.However,Xiangxi image in online literature is displayed from the perspective of the other which is curiosity deduction and mysterious cultural interest as to folk secret news and mysterious customs in Xiangxi,with numerous texts to mould phantoms of Xiangxi image full of ghosts and goblins,undoubtedly becoming a kind of one-dimensional writing and aesthetic appreciation as to western Hunan image.

“Trueness” narration plays an important role in the history of modern and contemporary Chinese literature.While the epistemology of “trueness” is getting weaker and weaker,its axiology is getting more and more important in the present context of literary theory.Though deeply involved in the production of identity in recent 30 years,“trueness” narration has not constructed “trueness” which is strongly identified.The “trueness” narration of literature should be pointed to ideology against power structure and power relationships,and in this sense,its identity anxiety and circulation will never come to a stop.

For a long time,feminism has not got rid of the controversy between essentialism and anti-essentialism,and the construction of female subject has not been given enough attention.By examining the awareness and transition of female consciousness in the context of modernity,its positive role in constructing and developing female subject is affirmed;by examining the paradoxical expression of female experience in symbolic order and separation of female subject,the necessity of constructing female subject is affirmed;and by revealing the complexity of female subject in feminism discourse practice,such as women’s writing,the importance of female subject is emphasized.In the context of modernity,if women want to gain positive identity,they have to gain the qualification to become subject at first,then they may enter the representation system around Phallocentrism,and after that they can construct female subject in the interaction with other men.

It is a unique cultural phenomenon in the study fields of Chinese biography and literature that Western litterateurs have written certain extraterritorial biographies in China.Such biographies,written in a time of the eastward transmission of Western sciences and of the integration between eastern and western cultures,have undergone four stages of development.These biographies are marked with the conflictions and integrations between Chinese and Western concepts of literature,which has fostered the historical process of modernization transformation of Chinese biographies and Chinese literature.It is enlightened that suitable policies of cultural exchanges with foreign countries,and free cultural atmosphere are very important to cultural and literature exchanges between China and Western countries.

Asa key figure of Changzhou Ci School,Zhou Ji made comment of Bai Shi in his Jiecunzhai Lunci Zazhu and first positively put forward the significant idea of “attachment and implication”.He established his theory through destruction,criticizing the creation practice of Jiang Kui and Zhang Yan.He put forward the aesthetic ideal of reconciling attachment and implication to richness on the basis of Zhang Huiyan’s Ci theory.With both epochal background and theoretical significance,his arguments have important influence on the final establishment of Changzhou Ci School.

“Writing carrying doctrine”,“poems expressing wills” and “poems endowed with feeling” were key concepts in Chinese classical literary criticism.“Writing carrying doctrine” emphasized unconditional subsidiary to doctrine,“poems expressing wills” emphasized the expression of subjective feelings,while “poems endowed with feeling” was an inclusive concept.The writers during the May 4th movement chose the concept of “poems expressing wills” historically under the dual consideration of social enlightenment and establishment of modern literature.They carried on a two-way criticism on the concept of “Writing carrying doctrine” and “poems endowed with feeling”,while paradoxically hovering in between them.The writers began differentiation in two directions after the May 4th movement,one was the personalized color of “will” faded to “doctrine”;one was the social responsibility of “will” subsided gradually to “feeling”.The differentiation was inevitable when the concept of modern literature gradually diversified and the discipline of modern literature developed.

In the late Tang Dynasty and Five Dynasties,Confucianism was in a declining tendency,during which no influential scholars or poets appeared to restore Confucianism except the few like Pi Rixiu.Their limited effort to reverse the situation,in the hope to continue the remaining prestige and influence of the literary movement in the mid Tang Dynasty,was in vain.Instead,their theories were separated from the practice,falling in falsity and vulgar.Literary spirit at this time had flinched into individual emotional world,with anti-moral sensation and gorgeous words being aesthetic fashion and literary purpose going far away from Confucianism.With the turn of literary aesthetics,their moral value and poetics were no more significant.

In the construction of imagery in modern Chinese poetics,the critics mainly made theoretical interpretations of the appreciation of imagery from the following two aspects:standards of appreciation of imagery and requirements for the readers.Appreciation of imagery should conform to the standards of originality,richness and harmony;and the readers should be equipped with the ability of imagination,analysis,and comprehension.

There are closed relationships between literary production,consumption and political consumption under the precondition of political priority in the history of Chinese literary criticism.In literary creation,political consumption is mainly reflected in the authors’ interpretation and deduction of politics,that is,whether literature is to express politics directly or to hide it.In literary consumption,political consumption is mainly reflected in the readers’ excavating and sharing of political factors,that is,whether they interpret the political factors as far-fetched or through rational reading.As the starting point to study the relationship between literature and politics,political consumption determines the direction of this relationship.According to Marxist theory of esthetics,politics in literature should be the sensibility representation of human nature instead of power arena.

In comparison with the Chinese classical novels,there are some new natures in New Novel publishing by press in Early 20th century:the location shifting from the edge to the centre in the literary structure,advocating of stylistic innovations and to write in common saying,the value pursuing from leisure or aesthetics to the grand narrative to enlighten and save society,narrative appearing the modernity spirits of seeking of being,overreaching selfish,and designing for the future.While in the literature field inclining to politics,the New Novel has many limits,such as the blood consciousness hided by collective fancy,the over displaying of narrative voice and the stripping of modernity,thus making it can not achieve the ranks of modern novels.

In the modern turn of the late Qing and the early Republic period’s Chinese society,literary audience,especially readers’ group made two major shifts of direction——one is the polarization of literati readers,and the other is the expansion of urban readers.These shifts enabled or to say led to the germination of unprecedented reader’s imaginations and selections,and in turn,indirectly or directly influenced the appeal and direction of Late Qing and early Republic period’s literary development. Traces of the influence of readers’ shifts,imaginations and selections on late Qing and early Republic period’s literary atmosphere,production and even system and development could also be found in the advocation of Literary Reformation and the rise of Popular Fiction.

Further researches on Foucault’s thoughts particularly on the Relationship Ontology shall be carried out.Relationship Ontology is the core of Foucault’s Literature Ontology,which consists of three dimensions of experience,metaphor and history.Experience focuses on the relation between existence and the other,embodying the dialogue between rationality and irrationality;metaphor focuses on the form and meaning,restructuring the internal and external relations of language;and history is the relation between structure and change,in which discourse analysis is an effective way.Relationship Ontology is of great significance for the reflections and recognition on the postmodern literary theory,and enlightenment for the development of modern literary discipline.

is not an unqualified mother for her deficiency of maternal consciousness and rejecting for maternal love,which can be examined from her words and conducts.Although the female freedom and gender struggle contained in the abnormality of maternal consciousness is limited and mixed,it is closely related to Emma’s particular personality and psychological state,to the developing environment of her deficiency of maternal consciousness and shallow mind and the male-dominated society as well.

The Western modern author theory criticizes the notion of author as to be subjective and denies the authority of author above his works.However,this theory doesn’t get itself out of this notion entirely yet.In fact,the reason that author loses his authority to explain his own works is not the text games or reader’s carnival,but fluid subjectivity,the intersubjectivity which is melted in the process of creation.Author transcends himself by self-talk from existence for reality to existence for idealism.And this transcending leaves its trace in the works;so the works are a process of this self-talk.The works attract readers into this talk too,and the readers can also transcend themselves through the talk.

Literature research from the perspective of cultural geography is to unfold the wholeness of literature by borrowing the form of geographical space.Chinese literature has undergone a process from a relatively static and closed regional research to a dynamic research of cultural geography,with “space” being the key words of cultural geography.Re-explaining and understanding the inner meaning of literature from the perspective of literature space is significant to transcend present literature research and construct a new literature paradigm with the coexistence of time and space.

Generally,images of women inMoyan’s novels transfer from love to desire.Women in his early novels pursue pure love,which gives the readers a sense of beauty.Dai Fenglian is the representative of the women images in his midterm novels,in which the writer expresses his support for women’s total emancipation in the new age.However,the late novels are crowded with female’s physical description and sexual desire.Women have become the sexual aim in man’s eyes,which poses a kind of profanity to women.This is caused by the writer’s aim of catering to the reading market.

The four literature trends and literature phenomena before the 1980s,including the humanity writing during the May Fourth period,class writing during 1930—1940,political party writing during 1950—1960 and the leader-group writing during Cultural Revolution,were all confined to the thinking mode and visual threshold of “human and society”.After the 1980s,Chinese literature writing has turned to ecological writing,with “human and nature” as its reflection object and performance object,making it a most original,unrepeated and significant turn compared with the previous four.

Historians usually divide literature of the pre-Qin Dynasty into three stylistic types of quotation,conversation,and monograph,regarding that they evolve this way accordingly.This induction generally illustrates the stylistic development of the pre-Qin literature;however,the new material may give a new interpretation for the specific stylistic development.Confucius’ speech and behavior are mainly recorded in Analects of Confucius,and they are also scattered in other literature similar to it.In Analects of Confucius,texts recording Confucius’ speech are dominant,which can be divided into three styles of maxim,conversation,and Shiyu (literature recording wandering scholar’s speech),and long texts are rarely found except in Shiyu style.Literature similar to Analects of Confucius carries on these styles on the one hand,and on the other hand develops the type of quotation into lengthy and monograph texts.Therefore,the types and stylistic changes in the Literature of pre-Qin Dynasty are complicated,with a multiple path,and the previously dominant idea of direct evolution may not be true.

As a product of the human knowledge’s discipline standardization dominated by the modern cognitive rationality,literary theory has special regulations on the basis of knowledge production,which determines the double value validity of the knowledge production in literary theory.On the one hand,knowledge producer’s value judgment and pursuit provide an indispensable “intellectual”quality and creative character to the knowledge production,and make the literary experience become theory discourse.On the other hand,it participates in the composition of knowledge forms in literary theory,and guarantees humanities intention of the related knowledge production.Correct understanding of the knowledge production is an important theoretical premise,which can promote the level of literary theory’s construction.
