Agricultural Education in U.S.Basic Education:A Thought-Provoking Strategic Issue

Abstract: Influenced by traditional concepts,industry characteristics,and urbanization trends,rural revitalization in China lacks strong talent support,with the root cause being the failure to fully leverage the role of agricultural education in basic education.In contrast,the United States has developed a comprehensive agricultural education system that began in higher education,developed through secondary vocational education,and matured in K-12 education.This system is well-suited for both higher and basic education,meets the needs of both academic and vocational education,and has distinctregional characteristics.Its multi-party participation,top-down framework structure,interdisciplinary approach,and cyclical model of education and industry support may provide valuable insights for agricultural education in urban and rural schools in China.China's agricultural education in primary and secondary schools has both historical traditions and practical significance.First,it aligns with the requirement of "five-education integration," serving as an organic combination and extension of labor and ecological civilization education.Second,it helps supply more talents to higher education programs related to agriculture and forestry,providing intellectual support for agricultural technological innovation.Third,it is a crucial tool for the rural revitalization strategy,guiding talent flow towards rural areas and forming the basis for the integration of "education,technology,and talent" in agriculture.China should promptly strengthen national top-level design and establish a policy support system for agricultural education in basic education.It should also form professional associations for agricultural education in primary and secondary schools,integrate agricultural education into existing curricula,emphasize the "five-education integration" orientation,and encourage school-based distinctive development.By relying on local resources to establish agricultural clubs and research bases,and fostering a social atmosphere of "knowing and loving agriculture," China can reserve talent momentum for rural revitalization.
