Money, stories about money, and business activities related to money are intentionally and repeatedly described in Shen Congwen’s The Bordering Town, which shows Shen’s reflection on modernity from money perspective and makes money the core theme of the novel.Shen realized that capital had damaged the poetic relevance between man and man,man and nature, and man and land, leading to the spatial homogenization of man, nature, and the charming world.Purposefully restoring money from an abstract material of equivalent exchange to a symbolic gift, and describing the heterogeneous space brought by capital,Shen Congwen showed his criticism to modernity based on capital.

As a non-party liberalist,Shen Congwen’s literary creation and life experience are closely related to modern Chinese literalism. His unique writing style, separated from the mainstream of New Literature Movement and revolutionary literature, may be regarded as a folk writing in a sense.Shen’s life, from his beginning of writing to the end of it,is a true epitome of a modern Chinese liberal writer. In his narration of ordinary country life,Shen’s works present his inner reflection on the way of life which had not been changed for hundreds of years. He sang for the solemnity and beauty of life, and worried about the ignorance and stillness behind it.Should we save modern rationality with traditional culture or correct the country ignorance with modern civilization? Shen could not solve this problem, and it is also what we need to clarify in reconstructing morality of Chinese nation.

“Girl student” is one of the signifier signs in the modern discourse system of 20th century China. As a metonymy symbol of “modernity”,the liberated “girl student” becomes the reference of modernity criticism in Shen Congwen’s works, showing an independent male feature. Also,“girl student”,as the image of “the other”,contains alien and desirous features, whose objectification and objectivity are revealed in the abstract and contradictive descriptions. The image of “girl student” in Shen’s works forms the overlap between Xiangxi and urban society, showing the rural imagination of urban and the urban influence on rural. It also shows the writer’s self examination and his criticism and reflection on nationality and process of social modernization.

    Abstract1953)      PDF(pc) (582KB)(1340)       Save
Shen Congwen’s texts embody two aspects in literature and cultural writings:One was literal texts that expressed his cultural thinking, and the other was ethnographic text written with literary tools. Both of them pointed to the perception towards Xiangxi and its modern urban culture. Two types of text had distinctive ethnographic characteristics. The causes of characteristics of Shen Congwen’s ethnographical writing lied in a combination of internal and external sight in the life experiences which led to his cross-cultural relativism. This was also the inevitable result of Shen Congwen’s stylistic experiments for expressions. The combination between Shen Congwen’s literature creation with the characteristic of ethnographical writing and the characteristic of poetics was the important reason that Shen Congwen’s cultural thought, aesthetic thought, artistic thought and expression were so independent and special in modern Chinese.

Western modern thoughts must be indigenized when they come into Chinese modern literary theory. When the aesthetic modernity of anti-enlightenment rational was brought into the field of enlightenment, independent spirit and non-utilitarianism of literature aesthetic were endowed with utility color.Shen Congwen advocated the independence of literature and art.Furthermore,he explained and protected self-discipline character of literature and art in the way of emphasizing literature aesthetic form, whereas, emphasis of the aesthetic independence and aesthetic forms finally falls onto the aesthetic of human life.In other words, the issue of aesthetic and life are combined in this way,and life salvation is obtained through ways of aesthetic. He advocated “divine nature” of aesthetic idealism to deny phenomena of realistic secular survival, philistine and mammonism, and in this way to achieve the ideal of aesthetical survival.

The Border Town is full of Chinese elements of landscape paintings. The rich beauty of connotation makes the referential meaning more significant than the narration of words, leaving far more individual and wider space for the readers to comprehend. The style and spirit of the novel are mutually pre-conditioned,its representation being its meaning.Comprehending the novel from the aesthetic perspective of traditional Chinese literati may help Chinese novel catch up with the Western idea to exhibit philosophical points through novel, and inspect aesthetics of Chinese literati, and even run neck and neck with modernism and post-modernism,contributing more to literature criticism of novels.

On the surface level, Shen Cengwen's novels are conspicuous of morality and they lacked a sense of history. However, from the dual perspectives of history and morality, we find that both historical sense and morality sense are mixed in his novels, making a unique feature of Shen's novels. One of the representations is the oblique and wandering standpoint of the narrator, the other is the infiltration of the two, i.e. history is questioned by morality, whereas morality is inspected by history, which caused such aesthetic features as ideality, tragedy, and embodiment in his novels.

The tragic behavior between the old boatman and Oedipus is very much alike in terms of their fight against fate and the undeserved result concerning their pursuit. This shows that The Bordering Town has possessed the basic element of tragedy and it is justified to say that it is a tragic one.Their differences can be seen in several aspects:while the former has a touch of slight fear, with the old boatman being a negative victim, the later can cause the readers’ shocking fear and strong sympathy. These two books are tragedies of kindness and fate, with a sense of foreordination filled in them.In King Oedipus, tragedy is largely hued, while in The Bordering Town, tragedy is understated. They all present a conflicting attitude toward fate:on the one hand, they all believe in fate and the overwhelming power of it,on the other hand, they attach great importance to strong perseverance and active behavior. These two books, with greatly different background, again prove that the writers’ contradictive contemplation on fate and human behavior has never come to an end.

The natural, familiar, and social environment described in The Bordering Town indicated Cui Cui’s material and mental loneliness and helpless. The lack of listeners forced her to make a self psychological compensation by singing folk songs, dreaming, and entrusting her emotions. She was self-esteemed and yet self-humiliated,and this psychology prevented her love with Er Lao.And the old boatman’s haste and Shun Shun’s secret psychological knot unconsciously catalyzed Cui Cui’s love tragedy. So the love tragedy in The Bordering Town was also the outlet of the depressed emotion of Shen Congwen.

The “Romantic Tales” created by Shen Congwen around 1930 plays an important role in the formation of his cultural concept, for they strongly and romantically express his “ideal life style” and are the core of his creation ideology. The creation of these “Romantic Tales” is an effort for Shen Congwen to seek the tradition of the Miao culture in Xiangxi and to construct the Miao culture in Hunan.By fighting against the dominant Han culture,Shen gains a self-recognition and affirmation, discovers and reconstructs the humanity of the Miao people in Xiangxi, and establishes his “small temple of humanity”.Further more,he tries to develop the particularity out of the Miao culture into universality to resist the popularity of the Han and Western cultures, using “small temple of humanity” as a frontier culture to resist “modernity”.

    Abstract1698)      PDF(pc) (1351KB)(1122)       Save
The description of the relationship between human beings and nature, human beings and land, and among human beings in the countryside of Xiangxi, and the images of peasants with natural humanity, healthy build and rich soul in Shen Congwen’s works make an everlasting “lyric poem of countryside”.Viewing from both a country fellow and a civilized person,Shen Congwen further illustrates the destruction of the beautiful land and the ignorance of life in it.It is in this strong sense of destructive tragedy that Shen’s “lyric poetry of countryside” shows the beauty of a deiform land which is rooted in his motherland and is shaded by modern industrial civilization,i.e.the harmonious countryside and the kind sons in the land.In this sense,Shen’s “lyric poetry of countryside” embodies a deep and conscious ecological sense and reproduces the beauty of a deiform land and constructs a literature with ecological idea of Chinese dimension.
