China,as a major tea-producing country, possesses a rich tradition of tea culture.Following the opening of new maritime routes,Chinese tea began to spread worldwide, transforming tea trade into a pivotal factor in globalization. This phenomenon led the foremost global power of the time,Britain,to adopt tea as a national beverage, giving rise to the distinctive British tea culture. However, the flourishing tea trade did not propel China towards becoming a dominant power;instead,it found itself subjugated as a semi-colonial entity by foreign powers. The Chinese tea industry experienced a decline from the late Qing dynasty until the late 20th century, only beginning to recover thereafter, but still falling short of achieving dominance in the global tea industry.A comprehensive study of tea history can unveil the roots of China's sluggish tea industry, while a reflection on the current state of the tea industry can stimulate further exploration into tea history. Therefore,it is imperative to give due attention to the study of tea history and culture, approaching the issue of revitalizing the tea industry from both historical and contemporary perspectives.

China's ancient civilization is not a unified one,but presents a situation with Yi in the east and Xia in the west. With Taihang Mountain as the boundary,Dongyi culture is distributed in the east, which is the ancient culture of the southwest minorities with the Yi ethnic group as the core today. And Huaxia culture, which is the ancient culture of the Chinese nation today,is distributed in the west. This fact has been fully and clearly demonstrated through the study of the origin of writing and archaeology. The situation of the early civilization of Yi and Xia changed with the establishment of the Xia Dynasty (about 2,070 BC-1,600 BC).After the Xia Dynasty,by determining the orthodox characters of the dynasty and redefining the world, the unified religious and political views of Chinese civilization were established. This inherent relationship between the monarch and the supreme god established by the geography and divine characters requires that the subsequent dynasty must shoulder the mission of inheriting the legacy of the previous dynasty, that is,adhering to the established and divine characters, for this is the fundamental guarantee of the legitimacy of the monarchical power. It is this political and religious tradition that has made Chinese civilization last for thousands of years.

Editor’s note: Broad and profound, Chinese civilization has a long history, and it is the only uninterrupted civilization in the world, shaping the unique value system, cultural connotation and spiritual quality of the Chinese people in looking at themselves, society and the world, having direct impact on people’s choice of their own and social development today. There are many important elements in fine traditional Chinese culture, which together shape the outstanding characteristics of Chinese civilization. At the forum on cultural inheritance and development on June 2, 2023,
general secretary Xi Jinping clearly summarized the prominent features of Chinese civilization as continuity, innovation, uniformity, inclusiveness and peace, which provides a fundamental basis for a profound grasp of the inherent characteristics and the path of Chinese civilization. In order to deeply study and understand general secretary Xi Jinping’s cultural thoughts, especially his important expositions on the prominent features of Chinese civilization, our journal has especially invited five scholars, including Wang Xuebin, Duan Yan, Zhao Yi, Xu Kun and Cheng Long, to make a concentrated interpretation, with a view to deepening the study of this issue.

As a process of interactive behavior, governance is prominently manifested as an interaction between monarchs and scholar-officials in the national governance of ancient China.Either as early as the clan society, headed by Shun and Yu,or under the rule of King Wu (before 1,043 BC),or in the Pre-Qin period (before 221 BC),co-governance is characterized in the initial positive interaction between the rulers and the sorceresses and sorcerers, and later the scholar-officials.However,after the establishment of the unified system, the center of governance is obviously biased towards the monarchs in the interaction between the monarchs and scholar-officials.The practice of "taking the officials as the teachers" no longer exists because the monarchical power is not restricted, which leads to scholar-officials' lower social status and the abuse of monarchical power.During the more than two thousand years of unified politics, the scholar-officials are constantly nervous under the monarchs, and few can have good endings except some who put forward political proposals, although their political ambition is always to serve the monarchical power. When the ancient empire encounters the western powers, the scholar-officials shift their political goal for the first time, from defending the political power of the monarch to saving the nation. This not only reflects the changing process of Chinese society, but also shows the transformation process of ancient Chinese scholar-officials.

Some of the campus buildings in Xiamen University and Jimei University are called "Jiageng Buildings",named after the patriotic overseas Chinese Chen Jiageng (Tan Kah Kee).Beautiful in appearance and harmonious in nature, each building is given a unique name. Some of the names come from classic works, some from literary quotations, and some are related to historical figures, all elegant and having rich cultural implications. The naming of the buildings has four characteristics.First,it comes from a wide range of sources, with accurate literary quotation and profound meaning;second,it forms an ingenious combination with the function of the building itself;third,it cultivates people through culture, making the building an "education master";and fourth,it makes good use of a person's name to inspire future generations and a place name to express the love to hometown. The names of each building, with deep cultural implication, show Mr. Chen Jiageng's educational concept of "cultivating people in a cultural environment".

Domestic academic circles generally take the history of western academic development as the background and study governance as a kind of social interaction.Governance from the perspective of Chinese history originated from Chinese social life, and its connotation is mainly to obtain survival materials, that is,order,or governance, can be formed only when there is a harvest. From the hieroglyph of "乂","乂" means governance, and the meaning is "harvesting".However,a richer social power relationship has gradually emerged around the production and distribution of survival materials, and the consolidation and expansion of this power relationship makes it inevitable to build a stricter order. The sense of mystery is an important basis for building order, and it is the intellectual group, who endow the ceremony with mystery and connect Heaven,Emperor,King and people to construct a set of order based on rituals. However,at the end of the Western Zhou Dynasty, after the mystery of sorcerer was destroyed by the secular monarchy, the "monarch-minister order" and the social order constructed therefrom were subverted, leading to the destruction of monarch-minister rituals and the social ethics as well. The world competes with each other on the basis of wisdom and strength, which is shown not only in the royal family, among princes,at the social level, but also in intellectuals.Since then, the vast majority of scholars are proud of the pursuit of peerage and money,so that for more than two thousand years, there has been a "lowly and monarch" situation. The governance mode of "monarch-minister interaction" collapsed with the collapse of the mysticism of rituals.

Recently the debate on the concept connotation of constitutionalism has been increasing in the academic circles.Actually, the focus of the debate should be on distinguishing the name and truth of it.The concept of constitutionalism has been over generalized in nearly a hundred years, thus has deviated from its original meaning and has caused misunderstanding. In order not to disturb the present constitutional practice, the concept of constitutionalism may be put aside in the academic circles.Based on the value concept of rule by constitution, measurements should be adopted to strengthen the constitution and promote rule by law.

The present study traces the cultural and political contexts within which Beijing considers global governance. They include:(1) Confucian dispositions toward non-interventionism and self-governance;(2) the socialist collectivist ethics that stress persuasion instead of unilateralism;(3) a lingering sense of inferiority arising from underdevelopment that harms self-confidence;and (4) the repugnant experiences with the United Nations (UN) and the United States that have dominated most international organizations since World War II.The consequential Chinese style of global governance is reactive rather than proactive, problemsolving rather than goal-driven,and attentive to obligation and reform more in other major countries than in failing states. That said,China could still assert global leadership by acting as a model of self-governance for other major countries and by intervening in failing states only through closed-door persuasion and exemplification as opposed to open sanctioning.

To what extent can Existentialism and Marxism be conjoined and synthesized and whether their syntheses are viable? Their theoretical standpoint needs to be sorted out respectively. From the existentialists’ point of view, there are mainly seven basic principles they adhere to:That science and the Absurdity of Reality, ambiguity presides over existence itself, the conscious of subject over everything, explaining and defending the individual freedom, the destiny of humanity, alienation in modern society and questioning the meaning of life and death.Marxism holds the opposite views of objective truth, inevitable uncertainty, human dependence on society, morality upon historical, optimism of historical progress, materialist and historical analysis of alienation and survival practice. Therefore,we can certainly point out that any attempt to synthesize Existentialism and Marxism are invalid, because there are unbreakable theoretical barriers between them.
