Abstract: In mid-twentieth-century Chinese literature existed three kinds of modernism,i.e.exterior modernism,Shanghai modernism and academic modernism.Shen Congwen was a pioneer of the last kind.Though emerging under the influence of exterior modernism,China’s academic modernism was unique in character. It was different from Shanghai modernism ,and its typical works included Shen’s “Fengzi”,“Gazing at Rainbows”,“Water and Clouds”and other stories. These works fully revealed one aspect of Shen’s modernist characteristics, from their subject matter to  techniques.Although they were“not mainstream literature”,they encouraged a coming generation of modernist poets and fiction writers.

Key words: Shen Congwen, exterior modernism, Shanghai modernism, academic modernism
