Sacred Animals:a Mythological Archetypal Study of the Aesthetic Ideals in Shen Congwen's Borderland of Xiangxi

Abstract: Shen Congwen's rural lyric novels belong to an important type of modern literature,the experience in Xiangxi being the key to his unique literary style,which embodies the core aesthetic concept of "natural humanity".There are complicated mythology and a large number of animal symbols in Shen's borderland novels.With the aid of mythology,legend and custom description,Shen Congwen skillfully uses animal archetypes to combine folk custom with "human discovery" since the May 4th Movement,and integrates the three dimensions of human's sacred attribute,natural attribute and social attribute.In literature,it creates the standards of beauty and goodness,sets up the personality model of "healthy natural humanity",and embodies unique aesthetic ideal and profound humanistic concern.
