Abstract: From the year 1840 to the 20’s of this century the inward tourism went through three stages, that is, the stage of initiation, the stage of development and the stage of prosperity. Its development closely related to the course of how China gradually became a semi- feudal, semi- colonial country. Thus, the inward tourism of modern China had a strong semi- colonial character. However, it propelled the tourism of China forward.
Key words: modern China, inward tourism
