Abstract: Appellations in Mencius are marked with rich cultural meaning and deep national characteristics.Because of the differences between Chinese and English culture and language, the translation of appellations in Mencius is of great difficulty. The English version of Mencius in the Library of Chinese Classics is the latest authority in China, however, many of the translated appellations in the Library do not comply with functional equivalence theory proposed by Nida, and their interpersonal function is almost lost in translation and even being reconstructed unequally.

Key words: Mencius, appellation, interpersonal meaning, loss and reconstruction
