Abstract: Wang Dewei’s idea that “where there is no late Qing Dynasty, there is no May Fourth Movement” mainly focuses on the starting point of contemporary Chinese literature. The idea is influential. However,it is also controversial due to his research perspective and the miscellaneous narration of the idea.Wang wobbles between the modernity discourse of late Qing Dynasty literature and the post modernity narration strategy, constructing and deconstructing discourse and causing a self denial of the discourse. This is because that he can not properly deal with the relationship between late Qing Dynasty literature and the literature of May Fourth Movement and it’s no strange why his idea is criticized.

Key words: Wang Dewei, starting point of contemporary Chinese literature, modernity discourse, post modernity strategy
