Abstract: Categorization and prototype theory is used to explain the construction of intransitive verbs taking objects. It is put forward that the construction of intransitive verbs taking objects is the peripheral member of the category of transitive construction. It shares some of the characteristics of the prototypical transitive construction, and it is restricted by the intransitive construction partially as well.Preposition incorporation and metaphorically extension of the prototypical construction make it possible for the intransitive to take object;the stereotypical relation and economical principle are the cognitive motivation.
