The Role of Trading Cities in the Development of Chinese Businss Clusters

Abstract: It is common to find one or more purpose designed wholesale markets attached to business clusters in China.The emergence of trading cities can be understood partly in terms of the larger reform of China’s distribution system.The contribution of these markets to the emergence and development of business clusters is aunique Chinese phenomenon that has so far had little investigation.In the process of interaction between business clusters and trading cities,various kinds of trading cities have occurred.This paper draws on existing literature to examine trading cities linked to a number of different business clusters.These markets are either embedded within an individual cluster or established to service multiple clusters.We identify four types of trading cities:real-estate trading city,cluster-induced trading city,hub& spoke trading city and incubator trading city.Through four-case studies,it highlights that the differences and similarities of each type.The current situation of trading city is reviewed.
