Abstract: Zeng Jize was a diplomat,while Robert Hart was the Inspector General of imperial maritime customs.Being involved in Sino-Britain and Sino-France negotiations and excluding Chinese diplomats,Hart caused discontentment from Zeng Jize.The latter frequently leaked information that Hart was unwilling to get known to newspapers,and the two combated fiercely in the bargaining of Macao between imperial China and Portugal.The combat lasted until Zeng died.
