A New Exploration into the Motive of Emperor Yong Zheng’s Policy of “Gai Tu Gui Tian”:a Policy of the Qing Dynasty to Strengthen Its Control in the South-west Frontier

Abstract: The internal political and defense situation and the special strategic position of the south-west frontier in the early Qing dynasty urged Emperor Yong Zheng to strengthen management in the area.One of the main reasons for the policy of “Gai Tu Gui Tian” is to prevent the local powers to change their sides and support the west Mongolians to invade southward.The policy was to meet the demand to strengthen the inner frontier defense.
