Cultural Consciousness and Self-presentation of Muslims in Present-day China—— An Investigation Focused on Muslim Communication

Abstract: Chinese Muslims are an ethnic community of Islam who live in a Chinese social context and enjoy an Islamic culture.The community of Chinese Muslims incorporates Hui ethnic minority group,Uygur ethnic minority group and other 10 Muslim ethnic groups as well as some Muslims among other ethnic groups in China such as Han ethnic group,Mongol ethnic minority group,Dai ethnic minority group,etc.For various reasons in history,Chinese Muslims could not well express themselves for quite a long time.But with the great social change taking place in China in the first half of the 20th century,some of the Chinese Muslims assimilated themselves in the whole context of social change and,equipped with a cultural consciousness,spoke on behalf of the Muslim community by means of starting publications and setting up educational institutions.Since the 1980s when opening and reform policy was being carried out in China,the cultural consciousness of Chinese Muslims was waken once more,and they took to starting publications as an important way of self-presentation.Muslim Communication,first published in the late 1990s,is such a kind of Muslim publication.
