Abstract: This article discusses the general trend of development of regional economies in our country and the different stages the three major economic zones are in and their strategic positions in the course of development.The author of this article holds that at the beginning of the 21st century, our national economic development will face the two tasks of industrialization and modernization; that different regions, owing to their different development conditions and different characteristics, will have to set up appropriate goals in the realization of industrializat ion and modernization;that the Eastern Rigion will have to place its emphasis on the modernization of its economy; that the Western Region will have to s trengthen its agriculture, animal husbandry, ecological environment and construction of base facilities, and quicken its indus trialization pace; and that the middle- level Middle Region will have to pay equal at tention to both indus trialization and modernization.
