Ancient Roman Writers and Augustus’ Reform of Social Morality

Abstract: Afterthe establishment of the principate,Augustus launched a reform movement of social morality to restore traditional belief on religion and traditional morality.Ancient Roman writers like Virgil,Horace,and Livy actively responded to Augustus’s renaissance measures.They praised the principate,which cleared the obstacles for his all-round reform and injected new vitality to the religious and moral lives of Roman citizens.With these strife was avoided,economy revived and developed,and the relationship among all levels of society in the early Roman Empire was eased,leading to stable social order.
