Abstract: Some views ofHuanan (south China) School on folk beliefs and local social construction are limited in the observation in the Qingshui River basin. In examining the check and balance among clans, the settlement clans, with a blood-like relationship in the form of alliance, have a strong influence on the ordering of local society under certain historical background. In Panzhai Village,a stele named “Yongzhen Cunzhong” (meaning to dominate forever in the village) presents a case in which five clans allied to form a blood-like relationship, showing the power of folk beliefs in the ordering of local social construction. Not only village autonomy and conscientiousness are found in the construction of local social order, but also there exists a state power behind it,which functions as the background resource of local social construction and the cultural tension of local social ordering as well.

Key words: the lower reaches of Qingshui River, the stele named “Yongzhen Cunzhong” (meaning to dominate forever in the village), membership of the village, local society;social construction
